Weekly links for 8/31

I have 2 links this week, I’m not sure if I’ve already linked to one of them before, but it’s cool so I’ll link to it again if I already have.

  • let me Google that for you From the site: This is for all those people who find it more convenient to bother you with their question rather than google it for themselves. What can I say? I’ve used this a couple times and love it!

  • gender guesser Paste in a writing sample, and the site will try to guess your gender.

I went to the VA today, and stayed for almost the whole time. I did my weekly project, and then did the laminating that they had for me. The laminator was really, really slow, so it took me a lot longer than I thought it would. I don’t really mind laminating; there were a couple people in the office while I was doing it, and so I got to talk to them. I thought I was going to get burnt at the end, because the laminator was really, really hot! It was hard to tell when the sheets were done, so I’d put my fingers really close to them, when they stopped moving, they were done. I asked what the sheets were for, and one of the people in the office where I was working, (I couldn’t work at my desk because the laminator wouldn’t fit on it,) said that it was on a “need to know basis.” That prompted me to ask the obvious question “is this classified information?”

A question and a couple more things.

First a question.

How do you like your coffee? When I drink coffee, I like it black, and somewhat strong. I don’t like weak coffee, which is the way my dad likes it.

Via that’s my answer

OK, now the other things. I’ll be posting weekly links on Wednesday. That’s the day I posted them last week, so that’s the day I’m going to start posting them on, (barring any unforeseen circumstances.) The other thing? Oh, it’s a twitter hashtag, #wlfind. So what is it, you might ask? Well, here is a fairly good explanation of it. To make a long story short, it’s a hashtag that’s being used for people searching through wikileaks recent release of diplomatic cables, (otherwise known as reports from US embassies around the world.) Since this latest release has been happening, I’ve read a few cables. They’re actually quite interesting, and surprisingly short. Short as in, the documents themselves, (or at least the ones I’ve read,) aren’t all that long.

So to actually tell this story, I have to start on Friday night. When I was at dinner with my family for my birthday, I asked them if they were coming to set up my TV that night. They said that dad would be coming to set it up. I told him he could come tomorrow, or even Sunday after I got back from church, but I asked him to please come set it up before he left to go to work. He’s still working out of town, about 3 hours away from here. I called mom twice yesterday to see when dad was coming over, and she didn’t answer. Then the third time I called her, I asked her what she was doing, and she said, “coming to your house.” If I wouldn’t have called them, they would have just dropped in unannounced. There are certain things I have to do before they come over, (dumping the AC bucket happened to be one of them this time.) My dad is usually pretty easy-going, and he doesn’t really care about everything being perfect, but mom and my sister do. Not only did dad proceed to set up the TV, (and that was totally fine, and exactly what he came to do,) but mom decided that now was the time to move all the furniture in my apartment. She was complaining while she was doing that, because things weren’t done in the way that she deems 100% perfect. She just had to change things on my walls too, (not that it matters to me, or that I care at all about what’s hanging on my walls, and I really, really don’t care! But the fact that she decided to rearrange the furniture just because she deemed it necessary, without asking or even caring about what anyone else thinks, (including and especially my dad!) is probably the most ridiculous thing I’ve experienced in a while! So Basically, by having mom and my sister there, a situation that would have been completely good was ruined. This is why I don’t like my parent’s coming over very often, because mom thinks she has to fix something every time she’s here, to get it just to her liking.

The last Saturday 7.

So here are 7 reasons why I’m ending Saturday 7.

  1. Little participation, there are some list memes out there that have really taken off, but Saturday 7 isn’t one of those.

  2. There are times I just forget to make the list until late at night, then I end up skipping it, because I don’t feel like doing it at that point.

  3. There are times I’m completely uninspired and have no idea what to make a list of 7 things about, or even come up with 7 things.

  4. I’m running out of prompt ideas for the Saturday 7 blog.

  5. Sometimes participating in someoen else’s meme is more fun, with Saturday 7, I felt like since I was already doing that, I couldn’t really do anything else, except answer questions.

  6. It became one of those things that I just had to do every week, it almost became post the same thing every week, because I have no idea what to post.

  7. It’s been a year and a couple months, and it’s the right time.

My birthday dinner.

So I just got back from my birthday dinner with my family. They got me a 32 inch flat screen TV! My CRT TV is small, but it takes up lots of space. Now I can do away with that, and most likely I’ll have the TV hanging on the wall, because I’m not sure if it will stand on the BUREAU. It might, but if it’s as thin as I think it is, there won’t be a way for it to stand on something. But then again some flat screens have that, so I guess I’ll find out. I asked mom if she knew if it had good speakers, she didn’t know. Some flat screens, (like the one at my paren’ts house,) don’t have very good speakers. I’m hoping this one will be better quality, but if I need to get a couple extra speakers to plug in, well I guess I’ll have to add that to the list.

The official and obligatory birthday post!

So, this is it, today’s the day. It’s my birthday! I turn 28 today, and I’m not really looking forward to getting older. I’m also not doing much today, I went to lunch with my friend earlier, because I had the free birthday coupon from Red robbin. I’m not going out to dinner with my family until tomorrow night, because dad’s still working out of town. It’s like it really shouldn’t be my birthday, because I’m not doing anything extreme or adventurous, or anything at all, for that matter. mom wants a skydive for her birthday, (or that’s what she said while we were camping, anyway.) If she’s going to go skydiving, then I just have to go! I asked my sister if she wanted to go, and she said yes, but she doesn’t want to pay for it. So dad and I will probably end up paying $450 for all 3 of us to go skydiving. I asked dad if he wanted to go, and he said no. but he said he would help me pay for it, none-the-less. So I’m looking forward to going skydiving, to celebrate mom’s birthday next month, but also to celebrate mine and my sister’s birthdays. Oh yeah, I made my own cake! So I have a cake that I like instead of mom getting me one, and completely messing up the instructions.

Weekly links for 8/24

This is the disappearing edition of weekly links. I thought I had 3 links, but it actually turns out I had one. One is just a browser extension for Google Chrome, and the other one seems to be nonexistent. So here it is, and it isn’t a very interesting one for most people, but I like it so I’m posting it. launch it now It’s a startup launch page thingy, I like startup launch page thingies, because wherever those are, startups seem to be. So yeah, that’s my link for this week.

Delaying weekly links again.

I’m about to leave to go to a concert at my church. I was actually going to try and post weekely links earlier, but I really wasn’t sure if I’d be going or not. It turns out I am, so I’m not doing weekly links today. Will try to get to them tomorrow. I spent about an hour at the VA today, after I finished my weekly project, there was nothing else to do. By the time I got home, it was after 10. My supervisor said she’d have some laminating for me to do next week, and I was like yay, coolness! laminating is fun! Laminating is actually kind of fun. I’m not sure what’s so fun about it, but I get to sit there while the machine burns the laminating sheet to the paper.

Ending Saturday 7.

So I’ve decided to end Saturday 7, I’m going to do one last list on Saturday, and then call it good. There are other list-making memes out there, I wasn’t the first, and I probably won’t be the last. There’s even one called Sunday 7, although that used to be a answer the questions thing, but now it’s turned into a listing thing. I think I’ll either participate in 7 quick takes, or top 10 Tuesday, or maybe Thursday 13. I’ll probably try a few of these, just to see which one I like. I liked doing Thursday 13, but couldn’t do it and Saturday 7, so maybe I’ll start doing that again. I have several followers on the Saturday 7 blog, but I’ve had very little participation. I’m not sure if that’s because I didn’t do a good job with promotion or what, but that’s what happened. As for the blog, I plan to post one last post on Saturday, keep it up for a couple weeks or so, and then delete it. There really isn’t anything important there that I absolutely need to keep. I love making lists, and I loved the idea of Saturday 7, but there are other memes out there that do exactly the same thing, and actually have participants. I’d like to thank the couple people who did participate, they’re what kept the meme going when I thought about giving it up the first time.

PS, I’ll post weekly links tomorrow, I think I actually do have a couple of links.

I'm back.

I got back from my camping trip earlier today, (like around 12.) I had to ask Mark to post on the blog, because I didn’t have time to schedule a post. Just after I hit publish, dad called and said that he was coming to get me. So I had no time for anything else. The rafting trip was fun! I didn’t jump in the water this year, it was pretty fast. So fast that when we stopped to eat lunch, both dad and I were in the water, and it started taking dad downstream, he then decided that it would be a good thing to grab me, but I was also starting to go downstream. Somehow I finally sidestepped and got out of the water, (my feet were sinking in the sand.) The last rapid was hilarious! The guy at the place where we rented the raft said there was a 7 foot wall of water, and he wasn’t kidding! I think we took on more water than we’ve ever had in our raft. I’m actually kind of glad I’m back. Then again, I should be glad we got there safely in the first place. One of the slideouts in my parent’s trailer was stuck out, and dad couldn’t get it to go back in. My dad and my cousin worked on it, my cousin took the motor out, and was checking to see if it was working, and it wasn’t. My dad had to hand-crank it in with a wrench, and it turned out that it came out about 3 inches when we were traveling. So on the way home, he used a ratchet binding to hold it in place. I’d like to thank Mark again for posting here on the blog!

Saturday, August 20, 2011

It's not the blog owner, but it's the guest poster!

"Oh no!" I hear you all groan. "What is this strange guy that our illustrious blogstress allows to post here going to say now?" Well, as said person specifically asked me to post "whatever", (her word exactly), here I am, and it isn’t going to be much. It certainly won’t be the standard Saturday posting tradition that she set up ages ago, but she’ll be back soon, I promise. :)

I’m not going to even pretend to be her, since I’m not her, for very obvious reasons. But, enough about that. I actually am posting now, so I don’t forget to, since I’m posting this with a thunderstorm watch on. And, knowing myself like I do, that could potentially be disasterous if I all of a sudden remembered to post later on and couldn’t do so. I hate letting friends down, and so, you all get to put up with me rambling about posting on my friend’s blog! I do wonder, though, what she’ll rope me into next. :) Maybe being more involved in Blogathon? ;) Women, I swear! lol :)

Before I have to leave.

I’m all packed, and dad says he’s coming after he gets done with some things he has to do in town. The grocery shopping trip last night went just as I expected, I’m glad I remembered how bad grocery shopping is with my family, and I sure hope I don’t ever have to do that again! When we were in the car on the way back here, mom flat out asked me, “so what are you going to report to your dad tomorrow?” I told her that he would probably ask me about her not paying me back, and if he does ask, I will tell the truth, because I don’t lie. She said it’s really none of his business, but I’m not sure how that could be, because they’re married. If it’s anyone’s business it should probably be his, because it’s her husband, or at least that’s the way I understand it. mom had to ask my sister if she could get anything that was unhealthy, she wanted to get some roles to have for dinner Saturday night, my sister said no, because they’re fattening and we’re on diets. She wanted to get some cracker/chip thingies, (I think they were chip, but they were like white cheddar flavored,) and my sister said no. I know one thing, I’m not doing this again next year. Every time we go somewhere it’s a huge drama, that I don’t have when it’s just me going somewhere by myself. Sorry for all the complaining! Oh yeah, your not getting Saturday 7 either, because I have no idea when dad’s going to call me and say he’s down stairs waiting for me to come meet him. I’ll schedule a post for Saturday, but it won’t be Saturday 7, which I’m actually thinking of giving up, and just participating in 7 quick takes, or another list meme like that.

ICLW August 2011.

So I remembered to fill out the form for IComLeavWe this month. The problem is, that I’ll be coming back from camping the day it starts, so I’ll be a bit late on starting. I fully intend to start the day I come back, (that’s if I remember, and it does depend on when we actually get home.) If we don’t get home until late at night, I’ll start leaving comments on Monday. But if we get home early in the day, my plan is to start on Sunday, (the 21st.) Last month I forgot, there was a reason, I only had one thing on my mind last month, and that was blogathon. July is usually a somewhat busy month for me, as i’m trying to get everything ready. I’d like to post a things about me list for IComLeavWe visitors, but I have one, and it’s my 100 things about me list, which is right here. So there ya go, all you probably ever wanted, (and never needed,) to know about me. After not doing ICLW for a couple months, (I took a deliberate break in June,) I’m looking forward to doing it this month!

Sometimes I wonder...

So I called mom to ask her a question about camping, and she asked me this: “do you want to go grocery shopping tomorrow night and help pay for the groceries?” OK, so any other time I would have been like fine whatever, (paying for other people’s groceries, especially if I don’t live with them, isn’t usually my favorite thing in the world, although there have been times when someone just needs a couple things, and I’m the one they’re shopping with, I’ve just paid for whatever it was.) But keep in mind that mom still owes me $80, from when she borrowed money from me in April. My immeediate answer was “not really,” and her question was, “so you’re not going to eat when we’re camping then?” Seriously… I can’t believe she even asked me that! Last year I went camping with them, and she didn’t even say anything about it. But this time, she’s basically saying you better come help pay for my groceries, (which will all go to their house afterwards, I won’t bring anything back.) I feel like calling my dad and telling him, but I know that if I do that, mom will call me back, and completely flip out on me! This is what she did when my sister told her that I told dad that she borrowed money from me. So now I feel like I have to go, or I won’t be going camping, or even worse, I’d have to bring my own food. Although I’m keeping that option in mind.

Plans for Friday.

We’ll be leaving to go camping Friday. Since dad’s working out of town, he’s coming home on Thursday night, so that we can leave the next day. He’s leaving early, but my sister isn’t getting off work until later, so mom and her are leaving then. I told mom I wanted to ride with dad, so that’s probably what I’ll be doing. We’ll be rafting on Saturday, which most likely means I’ll be in the water at some point, so I’m looking forward to that! It also means, that I won’t be here for Saturday 7, (or anything for that matter.) Right now, I intend to write the post sometime before I leave, but I’m not saying that I’ll actually remember to write it. I was at the VA for like an hour today, then came home. Unlike last week, they didn’t have anything for me to do after I was done with the weekly project.

Monday, August 15, 2011

Before I forget...

This is completely unrelated to anything, but I have a headache right now. Since I have absolutely no links ready, (because I kept forgetting last week,) I’m not doing weekly links this week. Maybe I’ll do them next week, but that will be the day after I come back from camping. I have to go to the VA tomorrow, otherwise not doing much else today.

Sunday, August 14, 2011

A question.

How many cans of soda are in your refrigerator? None, I never buy soda. I used to, but I gave that up a couple years ago. Not gave it up completely, I still order it when I eat out, or when I’m on trips, but as for just sitting in the fridge, none.

Via that’s my answer

I went to church today, haven’t really done much else. Next weekend, I go camping with my family. Then it’s my birthday the week after that.

Saturday, August 13, 2011

I forgot to post until now, so I’m skipping Saturday 7 this weekend. I didn’t do much today, I’ll be going to church tomorrow morning. Yeah, it’s 10, and I’m watching 48 hours, so I’m going to click publish.

Friday, August 12, 2011

Grocery shopping day.

I went grocery shopping today, with my friend, and her semi-x boyfriend. She calls him her x, and he isn’t living with her at the moment, (as of earlier today,) but they’ve been on and off for like years and years now. The fair was OK last night, both my sister and I wanted to ride rides, but she said it was too expensive. She’s saving money for a big vacation next year. I did eat there, and I got some cotton candy to bring home with me, so that was good! Otherwise, I haven’t done much today. I got the Friday song stuck in my head while we were at the store. Whenever I’m not having much fun, I think of that song, and either sing it or crack up laughing. PS, for anyone who hasn’t heard the Friday song:

Because I'm not sure when I'll be home tonight.

I’m posting this now, because I have no idea when I’ll be home tonight. Probably around 10 or 10:30, or possibly even 11. That will make me want to skip the blog post, (and everything else, for that matter,) and go straight to bed. My sister will be coming here around 5 to pick me up to go to the fair. She’ll be getting ready here, because she doesn’t plan to go home after work. Mom will probably already be at the fair, because she’ll be working there, manning the booth for the company she works for. Not sure what we’ll be doing before the concert starts, (probably just sitting there to save seats,) but I’m sure tonight will involve eating at some point. Since I never get to ride the rides, that’s the only reason I go to the fair anyway, both for the food, and for tradition’s sake.

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Today and tomorrow.

I didn’t do much today, but I did go to the chiropractor. Tomorrow, I’m going grocery shopping. After that, (later in the day,) I’ll be going to the fair with my mom and sister. Dad is working out of town, so he won’t be here. I’m kind of glad I don’t have to go to the VA tomorrow, it’s going to be a busy day anyway, and that would complicate things.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

My day at the VA, and gmail account woes.

I went to the VA today, and actually stayed for a couple hours. I did my weekly project, then put paper in the shredder. I came home, and went to check my email. Google detected suspicious activity on my gmail account, and made me change my password. I actually looked, and it does appear that there was some suspicious activity. Someone, (or something,)using a different IP address than mine, and placing themselves in a different state, (who knows if they were there or not, or if they were just saying they were,) was logged into my account. They sent an email to someone that was spam. I use fairly secure passwords, and don’t usually use the same passwords, (unless it’s really not important,) so I’m not really sure how this happened.

Weekly links for 8/8.

Here are the links for this week.

  • HN showcase I really like hacker news, especially the show Hn: posts, which are usually sites that are launching. This site displays just the show HN: posts and nothing else.

  • behind the name Everything you want to know about names… well pretty much everything, anyway.

  • Wake up dialer Easy simple, actually free wake up call service, no buying credits or anything like that. Just enter your phone number, the time you want to wake up and click “call”, and it does it. I tested this out this morning, and it actually worked!

  • test your vocabulary test the size of your vocabulary, how many words do you know? This is just for fun.

  • freerice Similar to that is freerice, in which you identify the meaning of words to donate grains of rice to the UN World Food Program.

  • OK, so I just got on google plus today, (woohoo, and big thanks to the random person on twitter who tweted their invite link, mine is right here, just in case someone wants one.) Anyway, Google plus profile URLs are really, really flippin long! This shortens them by giving you a username for your profile URL, instead of a random string of numbers

I’m right here on Google+, if anyone wants to follow/friend me. I messed up my plus by somehow making friends the default circle though, and I’m not sure how to fix it, (LOL.)

I made it to church!

I didn’t do much today, but I did manage to make it to church! I’m glad I made it to church, because I missed last Sunday, went the Sunday before that, but missed the Sunday before. I usually don’t like to miss church, (unless I’m going to be gone, or in the case of last weekend, I knew I wouldn’t be up on time.) I’ll be going camping on the weekend of the 21st, so I’ll be missing that Sunday. But after that, (barring any unforseen circumstances,) I should be at church on a regular basis. Or at least that’s what I’m hoping for! I’m going to be posting weekly links tomorrow. Pinboard was down last time I checked, so as far as having all the links in pinboard I don’t have that, but I know which sites I’m going to link to, (I think.)

Saturday, August 6, 2011

Saturday 7 46.

OK, so you didn’t think I’d remember to do a recap of last weekend, did ya? Well I’m going to do it here, in list form! So, 7 things about last weekend.

  1. First of all, thanks to everyone who donated last weekend! Aunt Carolyn, Kim, Sue, Anna, and Linda.

  2. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and left comments!

  3. I learned never to take tylenol PM the night before I have to stay up for 24 hours. Tylenol PM gives me headaches, so yeah… now I know what I’ve done wrong for the past couple years.

  4. I probably won’t ever use a theme again! I had way, way, way too much fun winging it!

  5. Stream of conciousness posts are a lot of fun, especially when I’m loopy! For some reason, making lists was my favorite thing to do, I’m not sure why, it just was.

  6. I probably won’t use a facebook event next time, people seem to just ignore facebook event invitations.

  7. That being said, I think things went extremely well last weekend! I don’t remember having that much fun, (or having one go that well since like 2007,) but I learn a couple things every time.

Friday, August 5, 2011

It's friday.

I didn’t do much today, so I’m sitting here going um… what do I post about? Yeah, today is one of those days. I don’t usually have too many of those days, but I guess I’m having one today. OK, so much for winging this post, and seeing what I could come up with, because I didn’t come up with much of anything. Oh well, Saturday 7 is tomorrow, and I already have plans for that. So… just skip this one… OK?

Thursday, August 4, 2011

A question.

Do you have guidelines for how you blog? Well I do in a way, and that’s to try not to reveal too much personal information. I never post addresses etc, because that’s an obvious thing. I also try not to talk about anything overly controversial, although I think I’ve broken that rule a few times. I’m not allowed to reveal locations of where we go on trips, because my parent’s are overly conservative when it comes to that sort of thing. Even though I don’t live with them, we sometimes go on trips together, we’re going camping in a couple weeks, and I have no idea where we’re going, although it will be somewhere where we can go rafting.
Via that’s my answer
I was at the VA for like an hour and a half this morning. I got everything done that I needed to do, then I left.

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

So, I called the VA today, and I have to go back tomorrow. I’m not looking forward to it, because I’m scheduled to leave at 8 in the morning, because that’s the only opening paratransit had. I’m also not scheduled to return until 12, which could mean 2 things, either I’ll be home a couple hours early, or I’ll end up waiting. I should technically be home like 3 hours early, because these report thingies don’t take that long, and they usually don’t have anything for me to do afterwards.

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Oops, why did I do that?

Last week I posted about the computer issues I had at the VA. When I left there last Tuesday, I said I’d call them on Monday. I remembered to call paratransit yesterday, but not the VA. It completely slipped my mind, and I didn’t realize it until I was on paratransit this morning. It was the shortest trip ever, and a few minutes after I got there, I left.

Back for more quizzes.

So, here they are, because I thought it might be fun to cheat on blog 365 for the 2nd time this year.

You Are Sulfur

People often misunderstand you. You are more of an optimist than you seem.

You are quirky, charming, and creative. You like to celebrate your uniqueness.

You are emotionally authentic at all costs. You let your true feelings be known.

You make the most of your experiences. You want to squeeze as much as you can out of every moment.

You Are a Snowflake

You are a deeply emotional person. You have a sensitive and tender heart.

You are so in love with the world. You are blessed, and you never forget it.

You won’t be deterred from your destiny. You know what you were meant to do in this life.

Your still waters run deep. There is a lot more to you than meets the eye.

You Are a Classic Cone

You are a compassionate and selfless person. You truly care about people - whether they’re strangers or friends.

You are always aware of and sensitive to other people’s feelings. You are tender and compassionate.

You’re not easily impressed with novelty. However, you do easily impress others.

You take responsibilities seriously. You follow through with everything you commit to.

You Are Determined

You do things your way, and you always get results. You’ll work as hard and long as it takes.

You are completely fearless. You refuse to let fear control you.

You are proactive, and you try not to let anything slide. You avoid lazy thinking habits.

You always have a way when your will demands it. You don’t consider failure an option.

OK, that was easy, so now for a couple random things, (don’t worry, I’m not going to make a list!) The first question I asked myself when I woke up this morning, (at 11 because it took me 4 hours to get to sleep last night,) was, “did anyone tell me anything important yesterday that I need to remember today? I think the answer is no, but I remember most everything anyway, (not sure how that happened.) I’m merging questions, turns out I have 2 other question files from over the years, one is a file with surveys in it. OK, that’s it for today.
